Volunteers are the heart of Sharing House’s mission. After a four-year hiatus from in-person events, Sharing House held a volunteer appreciation event at Brevard Music Center on March 23 with a lively country western theme.
More than 125 volunteers packed Searcy Hall to share a meal and to hear from Executive Director Shelly Webb. “We could not do what we do without you,” Webb said to the crowd. “Your dedication, love, and the gift of your time is deeply felt by our staff and our neighbors.”
Sharing House volunteers served 13,361 hours last year. Each week, 130 volunteers pack food orders, sort clothing, shop for school supplies, and listen to neighbors’ stories.
When the building re-opened in April 2022, Sharing House welcomed and trained new volunteers, ensuring the right fit for each volunteer. “We had to re-invent and re-imagine,” said Jackie Curtis, Crisis Services and Volunteer Manager. “I love the volunteers more than I can express. They give so much of their time- it blows me away.”
Volunteers range from kindergarten to their mid-80s. They build relationships with neighbors, and the connection is reciprocal. “Sharing House is an important social outlet. We know everyone’s names, and that makes all the difference. It’s wonderful to see people hugging, to hear people laughing again. It’s the reason we’re here,” Curtis shared.
